This past weekend in Fort Wayne, Indiana was the Brett Banasiewicz benefit trail jam. Weather was rough, but didn't stop everyone from having a good time and raising more than $2,000 dollars for Brett's recovery. Words by DK flow team member Nick Summerlot below:
“ I've known brett for about 7 years now I think. Over that seven years I have watched him go from the 12 year old who was way better than me on a 18 inch bike that I could ever be on a 20 inch bike, to the now 18 year old who is undoubtably one of the best in the world. All the time staying humble, having fun, and always learning something new. When I heard the news of Bretts accident, I was in absolute shock. How could that happen just one week after his biggest contest win to date? Brett has given so much back to midwest and Indiana bmx scene by opening The Kitchen Skatepark (arguably one of the best skateparks in the country) to the public, when he could just as easily kept it private and all to himself. We did our best to show him our appreciation, and to try to help a fallen friend and his family in their time of need by throwing a benefit jam with all money going towards his medical bills. With just 3 weeks to plan, going up against the Texas Toast contest, trying to contact potential sponsors during Interbike, and dealing with a less than cooperative Indiana forecast, I think we would have made brett proud. The day of the jam we had over 40 sponsors, including woodward, dk, vans, Gatorade, and so many more. I also ended up raffling off my personal DK Flux. Which ended up getting split up between two riders whos bike had been stolen just two days before. “
Shout out to Rich Hoppe, Nick Summerlot, and the entire crew that put this jam together for Brett.
